1Identifying Cockroaches
The most common species in Turkey are the German cockroach and American cockroach. German cockroaches are smaller (1-1.5 cm), light brown, and found in kitchens. American cockroaches are larger (4-5 cm), dark brown, and live in humid areas.
2Why Do They Appear?
Cockroaches seek food, water, and warm environments. Dirty kitchens, food residues, water leaks, and dark areas are ideal living conditions. They can be transferred from neighbors, grocery bags, or second-hand items.
3Health Risks
Cockroaches carry more than 30 bacteria including Salmonella and E.coli. They secrete allergens and asthma triggers. They can spread disease by contaminating food and kitchen utensils.
4Chemical Control
Methods used in professional treatment: Gel baits (in nests), spray applications (on surfaces), dust formulations (in voids), and fumigation (in enclosed spaces). Each method has advantages and combined use is most effective.
5Mechanical and Physical Methods
Cockroach traps should be placed at critical points. Electric UV traps, sticky traps, and trap stations can be used. Steam and heat treatments are also effective (above 55°C).
